The sigAGROasesor project aims to develop and refine a series of Decision Support Tools (DST) for extensive agriculture. These tools will make it possible to create a web platform offering on-line services to farmers, directed at allowing them to work more efficiently, effectively and competitively yet always in line with environmental and social sustainability.

Partners involved in the project are public entities from regional administrations in Spain. Their aim is to include this new tool in the services provided to the agricultural sector in order to guarantee growth and innovation.

ThesigAGROasesoron-line services platform comprises three pillars on which this expert system and decision-support tool are based:

  • The application of the latestGIS technologiesin the management of geo-referenced information, to make use of soil variability, climate, crop condition, plant health alerts, and biotic and abiotic risks in the decision-making process.
  • The use of web-based Decision Support Tools (DST)to systematise the decision-making processes.
  • The use of Geo-referenced Traceability as a tool to manage the records of the Crop Management Units.

The Decision Support Tools (DST) will provide recommendations on the following issues: crop varieties, fertilization, irrigation, and risk of plagues, diseases and weeds.

Pilot Schemes are a key point in the project. Included within project action A3, these schemes are directed at supporting the validation and calibration of the DSTon some 600 demonstrationplots in ten different regions. To achieve this, the data for the different variables (location, climate, leaching, etc) is to be made available to users in the form of maps (layers) of information. These maps may either be obtained from existing data or derived from remotely-sensed data. The maps developed and used in the project will make it possible to demonstrate the capability to take full advantage of all the technical knowledge available from the organisations involved. The incorporation of climate maps, weather maps and weather forecast maps will allow further variables to be considered for agricultural productionand also its environmental impact. Likewise, balance indicators N, P, K and C are to be included, with a view to calculating the Carbon Footprint at an agricultural parcel level.

The innovative nature of this project lies in the advanced development of a system of Decision-Support Tools with web access and GIS information management,directed at helping farmers withextensive crop growing. At a Crop Management Unit (CMU) level, this system provides all the technical information and allows it to be incorporated into the decision support tool rules, in order to obtain specific recommendations for extensive crop growing (varieties, fertilisation, irrigation, pest management). The GIS structure will permit a dynamic definition of the CMU, adapting these units to meet the needs of each specific user whilst offering the possibility of incorporating intra-parcel precision farming techniques.

Parcel-related sustainability indicators are also to be provided, enabling farmers to evaluate the environmental, economic and social impacts of the farming practices proposed by the tool. The Carbon Footprint calculation for agricultural parcels through the Geographic Information System and its geodatabase is a completely innovative feature of the project.
